katie sokoler is an awesome photographer and street artist living in brooklyn. her projects are happy and colorful. my favorite work of hers involves creating these lighthearted 'traps' and waiting for precisely the right moment to photograph people who walk right into them. basically, she makes me smile.
follow her blog color me katie, visit her website, and watch this video about how she makes her work.

Dispatches aka The Greatest Thing Ever
dispatches is a relatively new quarterly publication that most people have never heard of but that everyone should read and savor. as the brainchild of photographer gary knight and reporter mort rosenblum, dispatches strives to achieve the opposite effect of newsflashes that pop up on our blackberries or crawl across the bottom of the screen while we watch cnn. dispatches brings us, not quantity, but quality and depth.
with each issue, the dispatches team delves deeply into a single topic: water. poverty. the iraq war. russian politics. american culture. by combining smart, engaging essays with stunning art photography, this publication provides the reader with an in depth understanding of a certain pressing issue.
did i mention that the photography is amazingly beautiful? the website won't let me grab images to post here, but seriously check it out.

Avedon's Childhood Greatness
i discovered this in the book survival of the prettiest by nancy etcoff:
"one of photographer richard avedon's first snapshots was of his seven-year-old sister louise. the nine-year-old avedon was so entranced by her that he taped the negative to his skin and had the sun burn it into his shoulder."
crazy awesome. now if only i could figure out how to do this without giving myself skin cancer.....
